Algebraic geometry

Algebraic geometry is a branch of mathematics which, as the name suggests, combines abstract algebra, especially commutative algebra, with geometry. It can be seen as the study of solution sets of systems of algebraic equations. When there is more than one variable, geometric considerations enter, and are important to understand the phenomenon. One can say that the subject starts where equation solving leaves off, and it becomes at least as important to understand the totality of solutions of a system of equations as to find some solution; this does lead into some of the deepest waters in the whole of mathematics, both conceptually and in terms of technique.

Zeroes of simultaneous polynomials

In classical algebraic geometry, the main objects of interest are the vanishing sets of collections of polynomials, meaning the set of all points that simultaneously satisfy one or more polynomial equations. For instance, the two-dimensional sphere in three-dimensional Euclidean space \mathbb R^3 could be defined as the set of all points (x,y,z) with :x^2+y^2+z^2-1=0. A "slanted" circle in \mathbb R^3 can be defined as the set of all points (x,y,z) which satisfy the two polynomial equations :x^2+y^2+z^2-1=0, :x+y+z=0.

Affine varieties

First we start with a field k. In classical algebraic geometry, this field was always C, the complex numbers, but many of the same results are true if we assume only that k is algebraically closed. We define ^n_k, called the affine n-space over k, to be kn. The purpose of this apparently superfluous notation is to emphasize that one `forgets' the vector space structure that kn carries. Abstractly speaking, ^n_k is, for the moment, just a collection of points. Henceforth we will drop the k in ^n_k and instead write ^n. Define a function :f:^n\to^1 to be regular if it can be written as a polynomial, that is, if there is a polynomial p in :k[x1,...,xn] such that for each point :(t1,...,tn) of ^n, :f(t1,...,tn) = p(t1,...,tn). Regular functions on affine n-space are thus exactly the same as polynomials over k in n variables. We will write the regular functions on ^n as k[^n]. We say that a polynomial vanishes at a point if evaluating it at that point gives zero. Let S be a set of polynomials in k[^n]. The vanishing set of S (or vanishing locus) is the set V(S) of all points in \mathbb^n where every polynomial in S vanishes. In other words, :V(S)=. A subset of ^n which is V(S), for some S, is called an algebraic set. The V stands for variety (a specific type of algebraic set to be defined below). Given a subset V of ^n which is a variety, can one recover the set of polynomials which generate it? If V is any subset of ^n, define I(V) to be the set of all polynomials whose vanishing set contains V. The I stands for ideal: if two polynomials f and g both vanish on V, then f+g vanishes on V, and if h is any polynomial, then hf vanishes on V, so I(V) is always an ideal of k[^n]. Two natural questions to ask are: given a subset V of ^n, when is :V = V(I(V))? Given a set S of polynomials, when is :S = I(V(S))? The answer to the first question is provided by introducing the Zariski topology, a topology on ^n which directly reflects the algebraic structure of k[^n]. Then V = V(I(V)), if and only if V is a Zariski-closed set. The answer to the second question is given by Hilbert's Nullstellensatz. In one of its forms, it says that I(V(S)) is the prime radical of the ideal generated by S. In more abstract language, there is a Galois connection, giving rise to two closure operators; they can be identified, and naturally play a basic role in the theory. For various reasons we may not always want to work with the entire ideal corresponding to an algebraic set V. Hilbert's Basis Theorem implies that ideals in k[^n] are always finitely generated. An algebraic set is called irreducible if it cannot be written as the union of two smaller algebraic sets. An irreducible algebraic set is also called a variety. It turns out that an algebraic set is a variety if and only if the polynomials defining it generate a prime ideal of the polynomial ring.

Regular functions

Just as continuous functions are the natural maps on topological spaces and smooth functions are the natural maps on differentiable manifolds, there is a natural class of functions on an algebraic set, called regular functions. A regular function on an algebraic set V contained in ^n is defined to be the restriction of a regular function on ^n, in the sense we defined above. It may seem unnaturally restrictive to require that a regular function always extend to the ambient space, but it is very similar to the situation in a normal topological space, where the Tietze extension theorem guarantees that a continuous function on a closed subset always extends to the ambient topological space. Just as with the regular functions on affine space, the regular functions on V form a ring, which we denote by k[V]. This ring is called the coordinate ring of V. Since regular functions on V come from regular functions on ^n, there should be a relationship between their coordinate rings. Specifically, to get a function in k[V] we took a function in k[^n], and we said that it was the same as another function if they gave the same values when evaluated on V. This is the same as saying that their difference is zero on V. From this we can see that k[V] is the quotient k[^n]/I(V).

The category of affine varieties

Using regular functions from an affine variety to ^1, we can define regular functions from one affine variety to another. First we will define a regular function from a variety into affine space: Let V be a variety contained in ^n. Choose m regular functions on V, and call them f1,...,fm. We define a regular function f from V to ^m by letting f(t1,...,tn)=(f1,...,fm). In other words, each fi determines one coordinate of the range of f. If V' is a variety contained in ^m, we say that f is a regular function from V to V' if the range of f is contained in V'. This makes the collection of all affine varieties into a category, where the objects are affine varieties and the morphisms are regular maps. The following theorem characterizes the category of affine varieties: : The category of affine varieties is the opposite category to the category of finitely generated reduced k-algebras and their homomorphisms.

Projective space

Consider the variety V(y=x2). If we draw it, we get a parabola. As x increases, the slope of the line from the origin to the point (x,x2) becomes larger and larger. As x decreases, the slope of the same line becomes smaller and smaller. Compare this to the variety V(y=x3). This is a cubic equation. As x increases, the slope of the line from the origin to the point (x,x3) becomes larger and larger just as before. But unlike before, as x decreases, the slope of the same line again becomes larger and larger. So the behavior "at infinity" of V(y=x3) is different from the behavior "at infinity" of V(y=x2). It is, however, difficult to make the concept of "at infinity" meaningful, if we restrict to working in affine space. The remedy to this is to work in projective space. Projective space has properties analogous to those of a compact Hausdorff space. Among other things, it lets us make precise the notion of "at infinity" by including extra points. The behavior of a variety at those extra points then gives us more information about it. As it turns out, V(y=x3) has a singularity at one of those extra points, but V(y=x2) is smooth. While projective geometry was originally established on a synthetic foundation, the use of homogeneous coordinates allowed the introduction of algebraic techniques. Furthermore, the introduction of projective techniques made many theorems in algebraic geometry simpler and sharper: For example, Bézout's theorem on the number of intersection points between two varieties can be stated in its sharpest form only in projective space. For this reason, projective space plays a fundamental role in algebraic geometry.

The modern viewpoint

The modern approach to algebraic geometry redefines the basic objects. Varieties are subsumed in Alexander Grothendieck's concept of a scheme. Schemes start with the observation that if finitely generated reduced k-algebras are geometrical objects, then perhaps arbitrary commutative rings should also be geometrical objects. As such, schemes become both a more general algebro-geometric object, and a convenient language to describe those objects. This language of schemes has proved to be a valuable way of dealing with geometric concepts and has become a cornerstone of modern algebraic geometry.

Notes and history

Algebraic geometry was developed largely by the Italian geometers in the early part of the 20th century. Enriques classified algebraic surfaces up to birational isomorphism. The style of the Italian school was very intuitive and does not meet the modern standards of rigor. By the 1930s and 1940s, Oscar Zariski, André Weil and others realized that algebraic geometry needed to be rebuilt on foundations of commutative algebra and valuation theory. Commutative algebra (earlier known as elimination theory and then ideal theory, and refounded as the study of commutative rings and their modules) had been and was being developed by David Hilbert, Max Noether, Emanuel Lasker, Emmy Noether, Wolfgang Krull, and others. For a while there was no standard foundation for algebraic geometry. In the 1950s and 1960s Jean-Pierre Serre and Alexander Grothendieck recast the foundations making use of the theory of sheaf theory. Later, from about 1960, the idea of schemes was worked out, in conjunction with a very refined apparatus of homological techniques. After a decade of rapid development the field stabilised in the 1970s, and new applications were made, both to number theory and to more classical geometric questions on algebraic varieties, singularities and moduli. An important class of varieties, not easily understood directly from their defining equations, are the abelian varieties, which are the projective varieties whose points form an abelian group. The prototypical examples are the elliptic curves, which have a rich theory. They were instrumental in the proof of Fermat's last theorem and are also used in elliptic curve cryptography. While much of algebraic geometry is concerned with abstract and general statements about varieties, methods for effective computation with concretely-given polynomials have also been developed. The most important is the technique of Gröbner bases which is employed in all computer algebra systems.

Mathematics

Mathematics is often defined as the study of topics such as quantity, structure, space, and change. Another view, held by many mathematicians, is that mathematics is the body of knowledge justified by deductive reasoning, starting from axioms and definitions. Practical mathematics, in nearly every society, is used for such purposes as accounting, measuring land, or predicting astronomical events. Mathematical discovery or research often involves discovering and cataloging patterns, without regard for application. The remarkable fact that the "purest" mathematics often turns out to have practical applications is what Eugene Wigner has called "the unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics." Today, the natural sciences, engineering, economics, and medicine depend heavily on new mathematical discoveries. The word "mathematics" comes from the Greek μάθημα (máthema) meaning "science, knowledge, or learning" and μαθηματικός (mathematikós) meaning "fond of learning". It is often abbreviated maths in Commonwealth English and math in North American English.

History

:Main article: History of mathematics The evolution of mathematics might be seen to be an ever-increasing series of abstractions, or alternatively an expansion of subject matter. The first abstraction was probably that of numbers. The realization that two apples and two oranges do have something in common, namely that they fill the hands of exactly one person, was a breakthrough in human thought. In addition to recognizing how to count concrete objects, prehistoric peoples also recognized how to count abstract quantities, like time -- days, seasons, years. Arithmetic (e.g. addition, subtraction, multiplication and division), naturally followed. Monolithic monuments testify to a knowledge of geometry. Further steps need writing or some other system for recording numbers such as tallies or the knotted strings called khipu used by the Inca empire to store numerical data. Numeral systems have been many and diverse. Historically, the major disciplines within mathematics arose, from the start of recorded history, out of the need to do calculations on taxation and commerce, to understand the relationships among numbers, to measure land, and to predict astronomical events. These needs can be roughly related to the broad subdivision of mathematics, into the studies of quantity, structure, space, and change. Mathematics since has been much extended, and there has been a fruitful interaction between mathematics and science, to the benefit of both. Mathematical discoveries have been made throughout history and continue to be made today.

Inspiration, pure and applied mathematics, and aesthetics

Mathematics arises wherever there are difficult problems that involve quantity, structure, space, or change. At first these were found in commerce, land measurement and later astronomy; nowadays, all sciences suggest problems studied by mathematicians, and many problems arise within mathematics itself. Newton invented infinitesimal calculus and Feynman his Feynman path integral using a combination of reasoning and physical insight, and today's string theory also inspires new mathematics. Some mathematics is only relevant in the area that inspired it, and is applied to solve further problems in that area. But often mathematics inspired by one area proves useful in many areas, and joins the general stock of mathematical concepts. As in most areas of study, the explosion of knowledge in the scientific age has led to specialization in mathematics. One major distinction is between pure mathematics and applied mathematics. Within applied mathematics, two major areas have split off and become disciplines in their own right, statistics and computer science. Many mathematicians talk about the elegance of mathematics, its intrinsic aesthetics and inner beauty. Simplicity and generality are valued. There is beauty also in a clever proof, such as Euclid's proof that there are infinitely many prime numbers, and in a numerical method that speeds calculation, such as the fast Fourier transform. G. H. Hardy in "A Mathematicians Apology" expressed the belief that these esthetic considerations are, in themselves, sufficient to justify the study of pure mathematics. Notation, language, and rigor

Mathematical writing is not easily accessible to the layperson. A Brief History of Time, Stephen Hawking's 1988 bestseller, contained a single mathematical equation. This was the author's compromise with the publisher's advice, that each equation would halve the sales. The reasons for the inaccessibility even of carefully-expressed mathematics can be partially explained. Contemporary mathematicians strive to be as clear as possible in the things they say and especially in the things they write (this they have in common with lawyers). They refer to rigor. To accomplish rigor, mathematicians have extended natural language. There is precisely-defined vocabulary for referring to mathematical objects, and stating certain common relations. There is an accompanying mathematical notation which, like musical notation, has a definite content and also has a strict grammar (under the influence of computer science, more often now called syntax). Some of the terms used in mathematics are also common outside mathematics, such as ring, group and category; but are not such that one can infer the meanings. Some are specific to mathematics, such as homotopy and Hilbert space. It was said that Henri Poincaré was only elected to the Académie Française so that he could tell them how to define automorphe in their dictionary. Rigor is fundamentally a matter of mathematical proof. Mathematicians want their theorems to follow mechanically from axioms by means of formal axiomatic reasoning. This is to avoid mistaken 'theorems', based on fallible intuitions; of which plenty of examples have occurred in the history of the subject (for example, in mathematical analysis). Axioms in traditional thought were 'self-evident truths', but that conception turns out not to be workable in pushing the mathematical boundaries. At a formal level, an axiom is just a string of symbols, which has an intrinsic meaning only in the context of all derivable formulas of an axiomatic system. It was the goal of Hilbert's program to put all of mathematics on a firm axiomatic basis, but according to Gödel's incompleteness theorem every (strong enough) axiom system has undecidable formulas; and so a final axiomatization of mathematics is unavailable. Nonetheless mathematics is often imagined to be (as far as its formal content) nothing but set theory in some axiomatization, in the sense that every mathematical statement or proof could be cast into formulas within set theory.

Is mathematics a science?

Carl Friedrich Gauss referred to mathematics as the Queen of the Sciences. The mathematician-physicist Leon M. Lederman has quipped: "The physicists defer only to mathematicians, and the mathematicians defer only to God (though you may be hard pressed to find a mathematician that modest)." If one considers science to be strictly about the physical world, then mathematics, or at least pure mathematics, is not a science. An alternative view is that certain scientific fields (such as theoretical physics) are mathematics with axioms that are intended to correspond to reality. In fact, the theoretical physicist, J. M. Ziman, proposed that science is public knowledge and thus includes mathematics. [http://info.med.yale.edu/therarad/summers/ziman.htm] In any case, mathematics shares much in common with many fields in the physical sciences, notably the exploration of the logical consequences of assumptions. Intuition and experimentation also play a role in the formulation of conjectures in both mathematics and the (other) sciences.

Overview of fields of mathematics

As noted above, the major disciplines within mathematics first arose out of the need to do calculations in commerce, to understand the relationships between numbers, to measure land, and to predict astronomical events. These four needs can be roughly related to the broad subdivision of mathematics into the study of quantity, structure, space, and change (i.e. arithmetic, algebra, geometry and analysis). In addition to these main concerns, there are also subdivisions dedicated to exploring links from the heart of mathematics to other fields: to logic, to set theory (foundations) and to the empirical mathematics of the various sciences (applied mathematics). The study of quantity starts with numbers, first the familiar natural numbers and integers and their arithmetical operations, which are characterized in arithmetic. The deeper properties of whole numbers are studied in number theory. The study of structure began with investigations of Pythagorean triples. Neolithic monuments on the British Isles are constructed using Pythagorean triples. Eventually, this led to the invention of more abstract numbers, such as the square root of two. The deeper structural properties of numbers are studied in abstract algebra and the investigation of groups, rings, fields and other abstract number systems. Included is the important concept of vectors, generalized to vector spaces and studied in linear algebra. The study of vectors combines three of the fundamental areas of mathematics, quantity, structure, and space. The study of space originates with geometry, beginning with Euclidean geometry. Trigonometry combines space and number. The modern study of space generalizes these ideas to include higher-dimensional geometry, non-Euclidean geometries (which play a central role in general relativity) and topology. Quantity and space both play a role in analytic geometry, differential geometry, and algebraic geometry. Within differential geometry are the concepts of fiber bundles, calculus on manifolds. Within algebraic geometry is the description of geometric objects as solution sets of polynomal equations, combining the concepts of quantity and space, and also the study of topological groups, which combine structure and space. Lie groups are used to study space, structure, and change. Topology in all its many ramifications may be the greatest growth area in 20th century mathematics. Understanding and describing change is a common theme in the natural sciences, and calculus was developed as a most useful tool. The central concept used to describe a changing quantity is that of a function. Many problems lead quite naturally to relations between a quantity and its rate of change, and the methods of differential equations. The numbers used to represent continuous quantities are the real numbers, and the detailed study of their properties and the properties of real-valued functions is known as real analysis. These have been generalized, with the inclusion of the square root of negative one, to the complex numbers, which are studied in complex analysis. Functional analysis focuses attention on (typically infinite-dimensional) spaces of functions. One of many applications of functional analysis is quantum mechanics. Many phenomena in nature can be described by dynamical systems; chaos theory makes precise the ways in which many of these systems exhibit unpredictable yet still deterministic behavior. Beyond quantity, structure, space, and change are areas of pure mathematics that can be approached only by deductive reasoning. In order to clarify the foundations of mathematics, the fields of mathematical logic and set theory were developed. Mathematical logic, which divides into recursion theory, model theory, and proof theory, is now closely linked to computer science. When electronic computers were first conceived, several essential theoretical concepts in computer science were shaped by mathematicians, leading to the fields of computability theory, computational complexity theory, and information theory. Many of those topics are now investigated in theoretical computer science. Discrete mathematics is the common name for the fields of mathematics most generally useful in computer science. An important field in applied mathematics is statistics, which uses probability theory as a tool and allows the description, analysis, and prediction of phenomena where chance plays a part. It is used in all the sciences. Numerical analysis investigates methods for using computers to efficiently solve a broad range of mathematical problems that are typically beyond human capacity, and taking rounding errors or other sources of error into account to obtain credible answers.

Common misconceptions

Mathematics is not a closed intellectual system, in which everything has already been worked out. There is no shortage of open problems. Pseudomathematics is a form of mathematics-like activity undertaken outside academia, and occasionally by mathematicians themselves. It often consists of determined attacks on famous questions, consisting of proof-attempts made in an isolated way (that is, long papers not supported by previously published theory). The relationship to generally-accepted mathematics is similar to that between pseudoscience and real science. The misconceptions involved are normally based on:
- misunderstanding of the implications of mathematical rigour;
- attempts to circumvent the usual criteria for publication of mathematical papers in a learned journal after peer review, with assumptions of bias;
- lack of familiarity with, and therefore underestimation of, the existing literature. The case of Kurt Heegner's work shows that the mathematical establishment is neither infallible, nor unwilling to admit error in assessing 'amateur' work. And like astronomy, mathematics owes much to amateur contributors such as Fermat and Mersenne. Mathematics is not accountancy. Although arithmetic computation is crucial to accountants, their main concern is to verify that computations are correct through a system of doublechecks. Advances in abstract mathematics are mostly irrelevant to the efficiency of concrete bookkeeping, but the use of computers clearly does matter. Mathematics is not numerology. Numerology uses modular arithmetic to reduce names and dates down to numbers, but assigns emotions or traits to these numbers intuitively or on the basis of traditions. Mathematical concepts and theorems need not correspond to anything in the physical world. In the case of geometry, for example, it is not relevant to mathematics to know whether points and lines exist in any physical sense, as geometry starts from axioms and postulates about abstract entities called "points" and "lines" that we feed into the system. While these axioms are derived from our perceptions and experience, they are not dependent on them. And yet, mathematics is extremely useful for solving real-world problems. It is this fact that led Eugene Wigner to write an essay on The Unreasonable Effectiveness of Mathematics in the Natural Sciences. Mathematics is not about unrestricted theorem proving, any more than literature is about the construction of grammatically correct sentences. However, theorems are elements of formal theories, and in some cases computers can generate proofs of these theorems more or less automatically, by means of automated theorem provers. These techniques have proven useful in formal verification of programs and hardware designs. However, they are unlikely to generate (in the near term, at least) mathematics with any widely recognized aesthetic value.

Geometry

Geometry (Greek γεωμετρία; geo = earth, metria = measure) arose as the field of knowledge dealing with spatial relationships. It was one of the two fields of pre-modern mathematics, the other being the study of numbers. In modern times, geometric concepts have been generalized to a high level of abstraction and complexity, and have been subjected to the methods of calculus and abstract algebra, so that many modern branches of the field are barely recognizable as the descendants of early geometry. The earliest geometry

The earliest recorded beginnings of geometry may be traced to Ancient Egypt (see geometry in Egypt) and Ancient Babylon (see Babylonian mathematics) around 3000 B.C. Early geometry was a collection of empirically discovered principles concerning lengths, angles, areas, and volumes, which were developed to meet some practical need in surveying, construction, astronomy, and various crafts. Among these were some surprisingly sophisticated principles, and a modern mathematician might be hard put to derive some of them without the use of calculus. For example, both the Egyptians and the Babylonians were aware of versions of the Pythagorean theorem about 1500 years before Pythagoras; the Egyptians had a correct formula for the volume of a frustum of a square pyramid; the Babylonians had a trigonometry table. Chinese culture at this same time period was equally advanced, so it is likely that they had an equally advanced mathematics, but no artifacts have survived from which we could learn about it. This may be partly due to their early use of paper, rather than clay tablets or stone, to record their achievements.

The Greek period (c. 600 B.C. – 600 A.D.)

The Greek Period must be considered in detail, since geometry, for most of its history, was what the Greeks made it. For the Ancient Greeks, geometry was the crown jewel of their sciences, reaching a completeness and perfection of methodology that no other branch of their knowledge had attained. They expanded the range of geometry to many new kinds of figures, curves, surfaces, and solids; they changed its methodology from trial-and-error to logical deduction; they recognized that geometry studies “eternal forms”, or abstractions, of which physical objects are only approximations; and they developed the idea of an “axiomatic theory”, which, for more than 2000 years, was regarded to be the ideal paradigm for all scientific theories.

Thales and Pythagoras

Thales (635-543 B.C.) of Ionia (now southwestern Turkey), was the first to whom deduction in mathematics is attributed. There are five geometric propositions for which he wrote deductive proofs, though his proofs have not survived. Pythagoras (582-496 B.C.) of Ionia, and later, Italy, then colonized by Greeks, may have been a student of Thales, and probably traveled to Babylon and Egypt. The theorem that bears his name was not his discovery, but he was the first to give a deductive proof of it. He gathered a group of students around him to study mathematics, music, and philosophy, and together they discovered most of what high school students learn today in their geometry courses. In addition, they made the profound discovery of incommensurable lengths and irrational numbers.

Plato

Plato (427-347 B.C.), the philosopher most esteemed by the Greeks, had inscribed above the entrance to his famous school, “Let none enter here who are ignorant of geometry.” Though he was not a mathematician himself, his views on mathematics had great influence. Mathematicians thus accepted his belief that geometry should use no tools but a compass and straight edge – never measuring instruments such as a marked ruler or a protractor, because these were a workman’s tools, not worthy of a scholar. This dictum led to a deep study of the possible ruler and compass constructions, and three classic ruler-and-compass problems: how to use these tools to trisect an angle, to construct a cube twice the volume of a given cube, and to construct a square equal in area to a given circle. The proofs of the impossibility of these constructions, finally achieved in the 19th century, led to important principles regarding the deep structure of the real number system. Aristotle (384-322 B.C.), Plato’s greatest pupil, wrote a treatise on methods of reasoning used in deductive proofs (see Logic) which was not substantially improved upon until the 19th century.

Euclid

Euclid (365?-275? B.C.), probably a student of one of Plato’s students, wrote a treatise in 13 books (chapters), titled The Elements of Geometry, in which he presented geometry in the ideal axiomatic form. The treatise is not a compendium of all that the Greeks knew at the time about geometry; Euclid himself wrote eight more advanced books on geometry. We know from other references that Euclid’s was not the first elementary geometry textbook, but it was so much superior that the others fell into disuse and were lost. He was brought to the university at Alexandria by Ptolemy I, King of Egypt. The Elements began with definitions of terms, fundamental geometric principles (called axioms or postulates), and general quantitative principles (called common notions) from which all the rest of geometry could be logically deduced. Following are his five axioms, somewhat paraphrased to make the English easier to read. # Any two points can be joined by a straight line. # Any finite straight line can be extended in a straight line. # A circle can be drawn with any center and any radius. # All right angles are equal to each other. # If two straight lines in a plane are crossed by another straight line (called the transversal), and the interior angles between the two lines and the transversal lying on one side of the transversal add up to less than two right angles, then on that side of the transversal, the two lines extended will intersect (also called the parallel postulate). It was soon observed, and no doubt Euclid himself knew, that his fifth axiom could be replaced by the shorter statement “Given a line and a point not on the line, there is only one line through the given point and in the same plane with the given line that does not intersect the given line.” This is called Playfair’s Axiom, after the British teacher who proposed to make the replacement in all the school textbooks. The axioms, according to Plato, should be simple and self-evident principles, so clearly true that they need no proof. Euclid’s first four axioms meet this criterion, but the fifth, even if replaced by Playfair’s Axiom, is not simple, and most would say not self-evident like the first four. The fifth resembled more the theorems that Euclid proved from the axioms. Furthermore, Euclid developed a substantial part of his theory of triangles without using the Fifth Axiom. The speculation arose, probably during Euclid’s lifetime, that the Fifth Axiom can and should be proved as a theorem from the first four, and thus is unnecessary as an axiom. Thus began many centuries of attempts to prove the Fifth Axiom, and the question was not settled until the 19th century.

Archimedes

Archimedes (287-212 B.C.), of Syracuse, Sicily, when it was a Greek city-state, was the greatest of the Greek mathematicians, and often named as one of the three greatest of all time (along with Isaac Newton and Carl Friedrich Gauss). Had he not been a mathematician, he would still be remembered as a great physicist, engineer, and inventor. In his mathematics, he developed methods very similar to the coordinate systems of analytic geometry, and the limiting process of integral calculus. The only element lacking for the creation of these fields was an efficient algebraic notation in which to express his concepts.

After Archimedes

After Archimedes, Greek mathematics began to decline. There were a few minor stars yet to come, but the golden age of geometry was over. Proclus (410-485), author of Commentary on the First Book of Euclid, was one of the last important players in Greek geometry. He was a competent geometer, but more importantly, he was a superb commentator on the works that preceded him. Much of that work did not survive to modern times, and is known to us only through his commentary. The Roman Republic and Empire that succeeded and absorbed the Greek city-states produced excellent engineers, but no mathematicians of note.

The Middle Ages, Renaissance, and Reformation

The great library of Alexandria was burned. There is a growing consensus among historians that the Library of Alexandria likely suffered from several destructive events, but that the destruction of Alexandria's pagan temples in the late 4th century was probably the most severe and final one. The evidence for that destruction is the most definitive and secure. Caesar's invasion may well have led to the loss of some 40,000-70,000 scrolls in a warehouse adjacent to the port (as Luciano Canfora argues, they were likely copies produced by the Library intended for export), but it is unlikely to have affected the Library or Museum, given that there is ample evidence that both existed later. Civil wars, decreasing investments in maintenance and acquisition of new scrolls and generally declining interest in non-religious pursuits likely contributed to a reduction in the body of material available in the Library, especially in the fourth century. The Serapeum was certainly destroyed by Theophilus in 391, and the Museum and Library may have fallen victim to the same campaign. The Islamic ascendency in the Middle East, north Africa, and Spain began about 640 A.D. Original Arab mathematics during this period was primarily algebraic rather than geometric, though there were important commentaries on geometry. Omar Khayyám, for example, was a geometer as well as a poet. Scholarship in Europe declined until even the great works of antiquity were lost to them, and survived only in the Islamic centers of learning. When Europe started to emerge from the intellectual darkness of the Middle Ages, the writers of Ancient Greece and Rome were rediscovered in Islamic libraries and translated from Arabic into Latin. Euclid’s Elements of Geometry was recovered, and the rigorous deductive methods of geometry were relearned. Development of geometry in the style of Euclid resumed, resulting in an abundance of new theorems and concepts, many of them very profound and elegant.

The 17th and early 18th centuries

In the early 17th century, there were two important developments in geometry. The first and most important was the creation of analytic geometry, or geometry with coordinates and equations, by Rene Descartes (1596-1650) and Pierre de Fermat (1601-1665). This was a necessary precursor to the development of calculus and a precise quantitative science of physics. The second geometric development of this period was the systematic study of projective geometry by Girard Desargues (1591-1661). Projective geometry is the study of geometry without measurement, just the study of how points align with each other. There had been some early work in this area by Greek geometers, notably Pappus (c. 340). The greatest flowering of the field occurred with Jean-Victor Poncelet (1788-1867). In the late 17th century, calculus was developed independently and almost simultaneously by Isaac Newton (1642-1727) and Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz (1646-1716). This was the beginning of a new field of mathematics now called analysis. Though not itself a branch of geometry, it is applicable to geometry, and it solved two families of problems that had long been almost intractable: finding tangent lines to odd curves, and finding areas enclosed by those curves. The methods of calculus reduced these problems mostly to straightforward matters of computation.

The late 18th and 19th centuries

Non-Euclidean geometry

The old problem of proving Euclid’s Fifth Postulate, the "Parallel Postulate", from his first four postulates had never been forgotten. Beginning not long after Euclid, many attempted demonstrations were given, but all were later found to be faulty, through allowing into the reasoning some principle which itself had not been proved from the first four postulates. By 1700 a great deal had been discovered about what can be proved from the first four, and what the pitfalls were in attempting to prove the fifth. Saccheri, Lambert, and Legendre each did excellent work on the problem in the 18th century, but still fell short of success. In the early 19th century, Gauss, Johann Bolyai, and Lobatchewsky, each independently, took a different approach. Beginning to suspect that it was impossible to prove the Parallel Postulate, they set out to develop a self-consistent geometry in which that postulate was false. In this they were successful, thus creating the first non-Euclidean geometry. By 1854, Bernhard Riemann, a student of Gauss, had applied methods of calculus in a ground-breaking study of the intrinsic (self-contained) geometry of all smooth surfaces, and thereby found a different non-Euclidean geometry. This work of Riemann later became fundamental for Einstein's theory of relativity. It remained to prove mathematically that the non-Euclidean geometry was just as self-consistent as Euclidean geometry, and this was first accomplished by Beltrami in 1868. With this, non-Euclidean geometry was established on an equal mathematical footing with Euclidean geometry. While it was now known that different geometric theories were mathematically possible, the question remained, "Which one of these theories is correct for our physical space?" The mathematical work revealed that this question must be answered by physical experimentation, not mathematical reasoning, and uncovered the reason why the experimentation must involve immense (interstellar, not earth-bound) distances. With the development of relativity theory in physics, this question became vastly more complicated.

Introduction of mathematical rigor

All the work related to the Parallel Postulate revealed that it was quite difficult for a geometer to separate his logical reasoning from his intuitive understanding of physical space, and, moreover, revealed the critical importance of doing so. Careful examination had uncovered some logical inadequacies in Euclid's reasoning, and some unstated geometric principles to which Euclid sometimes appealed. This critique paralleled the crisis occurring in calculus and analysis regarding the meaning of infinite processes such as convergence and continuity. In geometry, there was a clear need for a new set of axioms, which would be complete, and which in no way relied on pictures we draw or on our intuition of space. Such axioms were given by David Hilbert in 1894 in his dissertation Grundlagen der Geometrie (Foundations of Geometry). Some other complete sets of axioms had been given a few years earlier, but did not match Hilbert's in economy, elegance, and similarity to Euclid's axioms.

Analysis situs, or topology

In the mid-18th century, it became apparent that certain progressions of mathematical reasoning recurred when similar ideas were studied on the number line, in two dimensions, and in three dimensions. Thus the general concept of a metric space was created so that the reasoning could be done in more generality, and then applied to special cases. This method of studying calculus- and analysis-related concepts came to be known as analysis situs, and later as topology. The important topics in this field were properties of more general figures, such as connectedness and boundaries, rather than properties like straightness, and precise equality of length and angle measurements, which had been the focus of Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometry. Topology soon became a separate field of major importance, rather than a sub-field of geometry or analysis.

Polynomial

In mathematics, polynomial functions, or polynomials, are an important class of simple and smooth functions. Here, simple means they are constructed using only multiplication and addition. Smooth means they are infinitely differentiable, i.e., they have derivatives of all finite orders. Because of their simple structure, polynomials are very easy to evaluate, and are used extensively in numerical analysis for polynomial interpolation or to numerically integrate more complex functions. In linear algebra, the characteristic polynomial of a square matrix encodes several important properties of the matrix. In graph theory the chromatic polynomial of a graph encodes the different ways to vertex color the graph using x colors. With the advent of computers, polynomials have been replaced by splines in many areas in numerical analysis. Splines are piecewise defined polynomials and provide more flexibility than ordinary polynomials when defining simple and smooth functions. They are used in spline interpolation and computer graphics.

History

Determining the roots of polynomials, or "solving algebraic equations", is among the oldest problems in mathematics. Some polynomials, such as f(x) = x² + 1, do not have any roots among the real numbers. If, however, the set of allowed candidates is expanded to the complex numbers, every (non-constant) polynomial has a root: this is the statement of the fundamental theorem of algebra. There is a difference between approximating roots and finding concrete closed formulas for them. Formulas for the roots of polynomials of degree up to 4 have been known since the 16th century (see quadratic equation, Gerolamo Cardano, Niccolo Fontana Tartaglia). But formulas for degree 5 eluded researchers for a long time. In 1824, Niels Henrik Abel proved the striking result that there can be no general formula (involving only the arithmetical operations and radicals) for the roots of a polynomial of degree 5 or greater in terms of its coefficients (see Abel-Ruffini theorem). This result marked the start of Galois theory which engages in a detailed study of relations among roots of polynomials. The difference engine of Charles Babbage was designed to create large tables of values of logarithms and trigonometric functions automatically, by evaluating approximating polynomials at many points using Newton's difference method.

Definition

For given constants (i.e., numbers) a0, …, an in some field (possibly but not limited to R or C) with an non-zero, for n > 0, then a polynomial (function) of degree n is a function of the form :f(x) = a_0 + a_1 x + \cdots + a_ x^ + a_n x^n. More concisely, the polynomial can be written in sigma notation as : f(x) = \sum_^ a_ x^. The constants a0, …, an are called the coefficients of the polynomial. a0 is called the constant coefficient and an is called the leading coefficient. When the leading coefficient is 1, the polynomial is called monic or normed. Each summand ai xi of the polynomial is called a term. A polynomial with one, two or three terms is called monomial, binomial or trinomial respectively. Polynomial functions of
- degree 0 are called constant functions (excluding the zero polynomial, which has indeterminate degree),
- degree 1 are called linear functions,
- degree 2 are called quadratic functions,

Graphs


- The graph of a constant function :f(x) = a_0 is a horizontal line with y-intercept a_0.
- The graph of a degree 1 polynomial function (or linear function) :f(x) = a_0 + a_1 x, where a_1 \neq 0 is an oblique line with y-intercept a_0 and slope a_1.
- The graph of a degree 2 or higher polynomial function :f(x) = a_0 + a_1 x + \cdots + a_ x^ + a_n x^n, where a_n \neq 0 and n \geq 2 is a continuous non-linear curve. The best way to analyze the graph of a degree 2 or higher polynomial function is by its end behavior, the number of x-intercepts and the number of turning points. End behavior There are four end behaviors which are direct results of whether a_n, the leading coefficient, is positive or negative and whether n, the degree of the polynomial, is even or odd.
- If a_n is positive and n is even, the right end of the polynomial is in quadrant I while the left end is in quadrant II.
- If a_n is negative and n is even, the right end is in quadrant IV while the left end is in quadrant III.
- If a_n is positive and n is odd, the right end is in quadrant I while the left end is in quadrant III.
- If a_n is negative and n is odd, the right end is in quadrant IV while the left end is in quadrant II. Number of x-intercepts From the Fundamental theorem of algebra, a polynomial of degree n has exactly n complex roots, which may or may not be real. Therefore, the number of x-intercepts can't exceed n. It also follows from the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra that the complex roots of a polynomial must exist in conjugate pairs. This implies that an even-degree polynomial may have no x-intercepts (because all its roots may be complex); an odd-degree polynomial, on the other hand, must have at least one x-intercept, since any pairing of roots into conjugate pairs will necessarily leave at least one unpaired for odd n. These "unpaired" roots must therefore be real. For example, a degree 4 polynomial function can have 0, 2 or 4 x-intercepts whereas a degree 5 polynomial function can have 1, 3 or 5 x-intercepts. Number of turning points The number of turning points of an even-degree polynomial is any odd number less than the degree, while the number of turning points of an odd-degree polynomial is any even number less than the degree. For example, a degree 4 polynomial function can have 1 or 3 turning points whereas a degree 5 polynomial function can have 0, 2, or 4 turning points. The following are some examples of polynomials of low degree.

Notes

The polynomials up to degree n form a vector space of dimension n + 1, which is sometimes called \Pi_n or K_n[x] (where K indicates the field of coefficients, e.g. K=R or C). In this article polynomials are written using the (canonical) monomial basis (i.e. 1, x, x2, …, xn), but it should be mentioned that other bases exist, for example the Chebyshev polynomials, which may be preferable depending on the problem domain.

Roots

A root or zero of a polynomial f is a number ζ so that f(ζ) = 0. The fundamental theorem of algebra states that a polynomial of degree n over the complex numbers has exactly n complex roots (not necessarily distinct ones). Therefore a polynomial can be factorized as :f(x) = a_n(x-\zeta_1)\cdots(x-\zeta_) where each \zeta_i is a root of the polynomial f. The Abel-Ruffini theorem in algebra states that generally there is no closed formula to calculate the roots of a polynomial of degree 5 or higher. Closed formula means a formula constructed using only the coefficients of the polynomial and the operations of addition, multiplication and exponentiation (and their inverse operations).

Numerical analysis

Polynomials and calculus

One important aspect of calculus is the project of analyzing complicated functions by means of approximating them with polynomials. The culmination of these efforts is Taylor's theorem, which roughly states that every differentiable function locally looks like a polynomial, and the Stone-Weierstrass theorem, which states that every continuous function defined on a compact interval of the real axis can be approximated on the whole interval as closely as desired by a polynomial. Polynomials are also frequently used to interpolate functions. Quotients of polynomials are called rational functions. Piecewise rationals are the only functions that can be evaluated directly on a computer, since typically only the operations of addition, multiplication, division and comparison are implemented in hardware. All the other functions that computers need to evaluate, such as trigonometric functions, logarithms and exponential functions, must then be approximated in software by suitable piecewise rational functions.

Evaluation of polynomials

The fast and numerically stable evaluation of a polynomial for a given x is a very important topic in numerical analysis. Several different algorithms have been developed for this problem. Which algorithm is used for a given polynomial depends on the form of the polynomial and the chosen x. To evaluate a polynomial in monomial form one can use the Horner scheme. For a polynomial in Chebyshev form the Clenshaw algorithm can be used. If several equidistant xn have to be calculated one would use Newton's difference method.

Finding roots

As there is no general closed formula to calculate the roots of a polynomial of degree 5 and higher, root-finding algorithms are used in numerical analysis to approximate the roots. Approximations for the real roots of a given polynomial can be found using Newton's method, or more efficiently using Laguerre's method which employs complex arithmetic and can locate all complex roots.

Several variables

In multivariate calculus, polynomials in several variables play an important role. These are the simplest multivariate functions and can be defined using addition and multiplication alone. An example of a polynomial in the variables x, y, and z is : f(x, y, z) = 2 x^2 y z^3 - 3 y^2 + 5 y z - 2. \, The total degree of such a multivariate polynomial can be gotten by adding the exponents of the variables in every term, and taking the maximum. The above polynomial f(xyz) has total degree 6.

Abstract algebra

In abstract algebra, one must take care to distinguish between polynomials and polynomial functions. A polynomial f is defined to be a formal expression of the form : f = a_n X^n + a_ X^ + \cdots + a_1 X + a_0 where the coefficients a0, ..., an are elements of some ring R and X is considered to be a formal symbol. Two polynomials are considered to be equal if and only if the sequences of their coefficients are equal. Polynomials with coefficients in R can be added by simply adding corresponding coefficients and multiplied using the distributive law and the rules :

  for all natural numbers k and l. One can then check that the set of all polynomials with coefficients in the ring R forms itself a ring, the ring of polynomials over R, which is denoted by R[X]. If R is commutative, then R[X] is an algebra over R. One can think of the ring R[X] as arising from R by adding one new element X to R and only requiring that X commute with all elements of R. In order for R[X] to form a ring, all sums of powers of X have to be included as well. Formation of the polynomial ring, together with forming factor rings by factoring out ideals, are important tools for constructing new rings out of known ones. For instance, the clean construction of finite fields involves the use of those operations, starting out with the field of integers modulo some prime number as the coefficient ring R (see modular arithmetic). To every polynomial f in R[X], one can associate a polynomial function with domain and range equal to R. One obtains the value of this function for a given argument r by everywhere replacing the symbol X in f's expression by r. The reason that algebraists have to distinguish between polynomials and polynomial functions is that over some rings R (for instance, over finite fields), two different polynomials may give rise to the same polynomial function. This is not the case over the real or complex numbers and therefore many analysts often don't separate the two concepts.

Divisibility

In commutative algebra, one major focus of study is divisibility among polynomials. If R is an integral domain and f and g are polynomials in R[X], it is said that f divides g if there exists a polynomial q in R[X] such that f q = g. One can then show that "every zero gives rise to a linear factor", or more formally: if f is a polynomial in R[X] and r is an element of R such that f(r) = 0, then the polynomial (Xr) divides f. The converse is also true. The quotient can be computed using the Horner scheme. If F is a field and f and g are polynomials in F[X] with g ≠ 0, then there exist unique polynomials q and r in F[X] with : f = q \, g + r and such that the degree of r is smaller than the degree of g. The polynomials q and r are uniquely determined by f and g. This is called "division with remainder" or "polynomial long division" and shows that the ring F[X] is a Euclidean domain. Analogously, polynomial "primes" (more correctly, irreducible polynomials) can be defined which cannot be factorized into the product of two polynomials of lesser degree. It is not easy to determine if a given polynomial is irreducible. One can start by simply checking if the polynomial has linear factors. Then, one can check divisibility by some other irreducible polynomials. Eisenstein's criterion can also be used in some cases to determine irreducibility.

More variables

One also speaks of polynomials in several variables, obtained by taking the ring of polynomials of a ring of polynomials: R[X,Y] = (R[X])[Y] = (R[Y])[X]. These are of fundamental importance in algebraic geometry which studies the simultaneous zero sets of several such multivariate polynomials. Polynomials are frequently used to encode information about some other object. The characteristic polynomial of a matrix or linear operator contains information about the operator's eigenvalues. The minimal polynomial of an algebraic element records the simplest algebraic relation satisfied by that element. Other related objects studied in abstract algebra are formal power series, which are like polynomials but may have infinite degree, and the rational functions, which are ratios of polynomials.

Euclidean space

In mathematics, Euclidean space is a generalization of the 2- and 3-dimensional spaces studied by Euclid. The generalization applies Euclid's concept of distance, and the related concepts of length and angle, to a coordinate system in any number of dimensions. It is the "standard" example of a finite-dimensional, real, inner product space. A Euclidean space is a particular metric space that enables the investigation of topological properties such as compactness. An inner product space is a generalization of a Euclidean space. Both inner product spaces and metric spaces are explored within functional analysis. Euclidean space plays a part in the definition of a manifold which embraces the concepts of both Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometry. One mathematical motivation for defining a distance function is the ability to define an open ball around points in the space. This fundamental concept justifies a differential calculus between a Euclidean space and other manifolds. Differential geometry brings such a differential calculus into play, together with a technique of launching a mobile, local Euclidean space, to explore the properties of non-Euclidean manifolds.

Real coordinate space

Let R denote the field of real numbers. For any non-negative integer n, the space of all n-tuples of real numbers forms an n-dimensional vector space over R sometimes called real coordinate space and denoted Rn. An element of Rn is written x = (x1, x2, …, xn) where each xi is a real number. The vector space operations on Rn are defined by :\mathbf + \mathbf = (x_1 + y_1, x_2 + y_2, \ldots, x_n + y_n) :a\,\mathbf = (a x_1, a x_2, \ldots, a x_n) Real coordinate space Rn comes with a standard basis: :\mathbf_1 = (1, 0, \ldots, 0) :\mathbf_2 = (0, 1, \ldots, 0) :\vdots :\mathbf_n = (0, 0, \ldots, 1) An arbitrary vector in Rn can then be written in the form :\mathbf = \sum_^n x_i \mathbf_i Real coordinate space is the prototypical example of a real n-dimensional vector space. In fact, every real n-dimensional vector space V is isomorphic to Rn. This isomorphism is not canonical however. A choice of isomorphism is equivalent to a choice of basis for V (by looking at the image of the standard basis for Rn in V). The reason for working with arbitrary vector spaces instead of Rn is that it is often preferable to work in a coordinate-free manner (i.e. without choosing a preferred basis).

Euclidean structure

Euclidean space is more than just real coordinate space. In order to do Euclidean geometry one needs to be able to talk about the distance between points and the angles between lines or vectors. The natural way in which to do this is to introduce what is called an inner product or dot product on Rn. This product is defined by :\mathbf\cdot\mathbf = \sum_^n x_iy_i = x_1y_1+x_2y_2+\cdots+x_ny_n. The dot product of any two vectors x and y gives a real number. This product allows us to define the "length" of a vector x in the following way :\|\mathbf\| = \sqrt = \sqrt This length function satisfies the required properties of a norm and is called the Euclidean norm on Rn. The (interior) angle θ between x and y is then given by :\theta = \cos^\left(\frac\right) where cos−1 is the arccosine function. Finally, one can use the norm to define a distance function (or metric) on Rn in the following manner :d(\mathbf, \mathbf) = \|\mathbf - \mathbf\| = \sqrt. The form of this distance function is based on the Pythagorean theorem, and is called the Euclidean metric. Real coordinate space together with the above Euclidean structure (dot product and the associated norm and metric) is called Euclidean space often denoted by En. (Many authors refer to Rn itself as Euclidean space, with the Euclidean structure being understood). The Euclidean structure on En gives it the structure of an inner product space (in fact a Hilbert space), a normed vector space, and a metric space.

Euclidean topology

Since Euclidean space is a metric space it is also a topological space with the natural topology induced by the metric. The metric topology on En is called the Euclidean topology. A set is open in the Euclidean topology if and only if it contains an open ball around each of its points. The Euclidean topology turns out to be equivalent to the product topology on Rn considered as a product of n copies of the real line R (with its standard topology). An important result on the topology of Rn, that is far from superficial, is Brouwer's invariance of domain. Any subset of Rn (with its subspace topology) which is homeomorphic to another open subset of Rn is itself open. An immediate consequence of this is that Rm is not homeomorphic to Rn if mn — an intuitively "obvious" result which is nonetheless difficult to prove. Euclidean n-space is the prototypical example of an n-manifold, in fact, a smooth manifold. For n ≠ 4, any differentiable n-manifold that is homeomorphic to Rn is also diffeomorphic to it. The surprising fact that this is not also true for n = 4 was proved by Simon Donaldson in 1982; the counterexamples are called exotic (or fake) 4-spaces. Euclidean space is also known as linear manifold. An m-dimensional linear submanifold of Rn is a Euclidean space of m dimensions embedded in it (as an affine subspace). For example, any straight line in some higher-dimensional Euclidean space is a 1-dimensional linear submanifold of that space.

Field (mathematics)

In abstract algebra, a field is an algebraic structure in which the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division (except division by zero) may be performed, and the same rules hold which are familiar from the arithmetic of ordinary numbers.

Introduction

Fields are important objects of study in algebra since they provide a useful generalization of many number systems, such as the rational numbers, real numbers, and complex numbers. In particular, the usual rules of associativity, commutativity and distributivity hold. Fields also appear in many other areas of mathematics; see the examples below. When abstract algebra was first being developed, the definition of a field usually did not include commutativity of multiplication, and what we today call a field would have been called either a commutative field or a rational domain. In contemporary usage, a field is always commutative. A structure which satisfies all the properties of a field except for commutativity, is today called a division ring or sometimes a skew field, but also non-commutative field is still widely used. Other languages have retained the old usage: for example, in Italian and French, division rings are called corpo and corps, both literally meaning 'body'. Instead, in German and Spanish, Körper (whence the blackboard bold K used to denote a field) and cuerpo mean 'field'. Notice that French language has no single word for field, they are simply called corps commutatif. Italian for field is campo, with the same literal meaning as English. The concept of a field is of use, for example, in defining vectors and matrices, two structures in linear algebra whose components can be elements of an arbitrary field. Galois theory studies the symmetry of equations by investigating the ways in which fields can be contained in each other. See field theory for more information.
